“Schizophrenia: Clinical Perspective and Social Work Interventions”

The PG Department of Social Work organized an expert lecture titled “Schizophrenia: Clinical
Perspective and Social Work Interventions” on 4 March 2026 at 9:00 PM for MSW students.
The session was conducted by Mr. Muhammed Althaf, Psychiatric Social Worker, Olive – An
Institution of Mental Health, Ernakulam.
The program began with a welcome address by Ms. Fidha Sherin M., First Year MSW student,
who warmly welcomed the resource person and participants. The expert lecture provided
valuable insights into schizophrenia, focusing on its clinical features, symptoms, causes, and
treatment approaches. Mr. Muhammed Althaf also elaborated on the role of psychiatric social
workers in assessment, psychosocial intervention, rehabilitation, family counselling, and
community-based mental health care. The session helped students understand the importance
of a multidisciplinary approach and the practical aspects of social work intervention in mental
health settings.
The session was highly interactive and informative, enabling students to clarify their doubts
and gain a deeper understanding of mental health practice. A total of 26 students attended the
session.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Shifa Nesrin, First Year MSW
student, expressing gratitude to the resource person for sharing his expertise and to all
participants for their active involvement in the session.
