Library

The Gems Library and Research Centre of the Gems Arts & Science College Ramapuram is one of the best libraries under affiliated Colleges of the University of Calicut. Being the hub for information and learning process,a well-designed library functions has been ensured for the utilisation of both the staff and learners in and outside of the institution.
During the period of 2008, Gems library started their functions with the collection of 1250 books and 12 Journals & 5 Magazines and 8 Newspapers.
The GEMS College achieved a historic milestone with the inauguration of its new annexure complex for the Gems College Library and Research Centre on September 19, 2022. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Sri V.N. Vasavan, the honorable Co- operative Minister, who inaugurated the complex. On the same day GEMS open Theatre with all the modern facilities was also inaugurated by the Muslim League General Secretary Sri.Kunjalikutty. Additionally, the Digital Library was inaugurated by Munavarali Shihab Thangal, marking a significant moment in the college's development.The newly built Research and Innovation Centre was inaugurated by Dr.M.K.Jayaraj, The Vice –chancellor, University of Calicut.

Our mission is to develop a tendency for reading through the library and provide students with an opportunity to enhance various skills including their writing skills.

Library Sections


The college library is arranged in different sections for easy access of materials and provides quick service to its users.The entrance of the library had a barcode scanner to record the entry and exit of the users.
The college Library has different sections and areas and are listed below


  • Circulation Section : For issue and return of the books and documents
  • Property Counter : To keep the personal belongings of the users
  • New Arrival Display : The newly added collections of the library will be displayed here
  • Reading Room : Space for reading their own textbook, study material, all printed materials and newspapers
  • Periodical Section: Journals, Magazines and weeklies are arranged here.
  • Digital Library: 20 Computers were provided with internet access.
    • Libraries have a digital library software Dspace,through which users can access the intellectual output of an institution.
    • A screen reader Software NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) has been installed in the library for the benefit of the visually impaired.
  • Technical Section: 1 computers here (for technical work, D space and server)
  • Librarian Cabin: 1 Computer for Verification
  • Circulation Counter :2 Computers for issue & return
  • Reprographic Sections: for Photostat and printing
  • Stack Room: Library collections are classified and arranged according to DDC 23rd edition.
  • Reference Section: for keep reference books (not for issue)
  • Question paper corner: Collection of Previous year question papers.
  • Report Corner: for previous years project reports.
  • Theatre: For Hybrid classes and meetings (11.2 DOLBY ATMOS Theatre system)
  • Research and innovation Centre: for seminar presentation, Research related activities
  • Periodical and journal archive: The library maintains a good collection of Newspapers, journals and magazine archive.
  • Publication Division : for Publication work
  • The books are encoded with barcoding technology, and it helps in the smooth running of the issue and return process of the books in the library. The issue and return process is carried out at the circulation section.
    College library has a good collection of subject books, reference books, Journals, Magazines and newspapers. College library provides INFLIBNET –N-List to access e-books and e-Journals. Apart from this facility, the library also provides previous year question papers and Dissertations. Library had a digital institutional repository in the Dspace platform through this library user can access the previous year question papers, syllabus, Project/dissertation. NVDA: Assistive technology for differently abled users are provided

LIBRARY AUTOMATION


GEMS Library and Research Center is integrated using Integrated Library Management System. Library automated in the year 2010 with the Book Magic Software and converted to Koha ILM software in 2018.Currently the software is running with the version (18.11.04.000). Koha is a full-featured integrated library system that provides you the tools you need for every task on a single, clean, web-based interface. Koha helps to work smoothly for the daily activities of the library, mainly circulation, cataloging, identifying the location etc. OPAC stands for "Online Public Access Catalog." It is a computerized system that allows users to search and access the library's catalog of materials over the internet. OPACs have replaced traditional card catalogs in many libraries, offering a more efficient and user-friendly way to discover and locate library resources. An OPAC (online Public access Catalog) is linked to Koha .The Users can check the status of their library account and the availability status of books in the library. The Gems Library and Research Center has provided Users with a Kiosk machine with OPAC facilities where users can explore the resources available at the library.




Per Day Usage of Library

The Embase Pro Suite Software is used to record the e-gate register. Students and faculties are provided with a RFID identity card for registering In/Out and lending documents. It also provides user login IDs and passwords to the students and staff for remote access and per day library usage is 140-150 students

Clubs and Committee

GEMS Arts and science college Library takes the initative of the clubs and Committees which conducts various activities and events on reading, competitions and authors meet up to encourage students


Rules and Regulations


  • All students and staff are members of the library

  • Students should maintain strict silence and discipline in  the library 

  • Personal belongings are kept in the property counter.

  • The number of books issued 4 to the PG students, 2 for UG students 8 for teacher, &4 for non-teaching staff at a time

  • Books are issuing for a period of 14 days for students and 30 days for faculties

  • Reference books will not be issued

  • A book may be re-issued to the same user if there is no other applicant for it.

  • A fine of Rs.1/ -for general books will be levied per day if a book is retained beyond the permitted period.

  • Absence from the institute will not be considered as an excuse for delay in returning the books

  • If a book is lost ,They shall pay 3 times the price of the book

  • Students must return their Reader’s Tickets when leaving the college and should obtain    No dues certificate from the library
