The PG Department of Microbiology, GEMS Arts and Science College (Autonomous), in association with JB International Academy, the Food Safety Department, Malappuram, MBSI, and IQAC, successfully organized the World Food Safety Day Celebration on 11 June 2026 at the Research and Innovation Centre. The programme aimed to create awareness about the importance of food safety and promote safe food handling practices among students and the academic community.
The programme commenced at 10:30 a.m. with a warm welcome address by Ms. Shameema M, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Microbiology. This was followed by the presidential address delivered by Ms. Ranjusha V. P., IQAC Director, GEMS Arts and Science College, who highlighted the significance of food safety in ensuring public health. The formal inauguration was conducted by Dr. Finose A., Vice Principal of the college, who emphasized the role of educational institutions in fostering awareness about foodborne diseases and preventive measures The highlight of the programme was an expert talk by Dr. Aswathi A. P., Food Safety Officer, Mankada Circle, on the theme “From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere.” The session provided valuable insights into food safety regulations, common foodborne hazards, preventive strategies, and the collective responsibility of consumers, food handlers, and regulatory authorities in ensuring safe food practices. The interactive presentation encouraged participants to adopt hygienic food handling habits in their daily lives.
An engaging segment titled “See it Live” featured a live exhibition and demonstration of food testing procedures conducted by students of the PG Department of Microbiology. The demonstrations offered participants practical exposure to simple food quality assessment techniques and stimulated meaningful interaction between students and the resource person. In addition, the “Lab on Wheels” facility, stationed on campus throughout the programme, provided visitors with an opportunity to witness advanced food testing methods and learn about food safety initiatives.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Resna N K, Head, PG Department of Microbiology, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, organizing committee, collaborators, and participants for making the event a grand success. The celebration effectively strengthened awareness of food safety and inspired participants to contribute towards a healthier and safer society.
