MARMARAM NATURE CAMP- IDUKKI
The students from Department of Social work of Gems Arts and Science College, went for a three-day nature camp on 15,16 &17th of June 2022. The camp was organised collectively by PG Department of Social Work Gems Arts and Science College and Kerala Forest department. The camp was at Periyar Tiger Reserve, Idukki. The main aim of the camp was to study about the forest and environment of Periyar tiger reserve. Periyar tiger reserve also known as Periyar national park, is in the mountains Western Ghats of Kerala, Southern India. This wild life sanctuary is home to tigers and a significant elephant population, as well as rare lion-tailed macaques, sambar deer, leopards and Indian bison. The social work department chose Periyar national park to conduct their natural camp. Because Periyar national park can provide very best exposure to the social work students. The social work trainees of Gems Arts and Science College reached Periyar tiger reserve, Idukki at 3:00 pm. And we had an orientation session by Ms. Asharani (Nature education officer of Periyar tiger reserve). The session was very informative and the trainees got a brief idea about the Periyar tiger reserve and had a discussion about the role of social workers in environment conservation. The trainees conducted cultural programs. The Second day was scheduled for trecking through the buffer zones of tiger reserve. It was a different experience for all the trainees. Walking and observing the inner forest is really exciting and a good experience. After that from 6:30 to 7:30 we had a detailed session about the tiger reserve and about tigers by Mr. Anoop Vijaykumar (Ecologist). The trainees shoot many doubts they had, and the session was a success. The Day was completed with an evaluation session. 17th june was the Last day of nature camp, and at early morning the trainees had a bird watching session. After that the trainees visited the museum at Periyar Tiger Reserve in which they could learn about the inner forest, birds, animals and so on. After that the trainees visited Periyar interpretation center. That was the last experience from Periyar Tiger Reserve, Idukki. Then the trainees visited Vagamon. About 45 trainees attended the camp.

MAZHAVILL RURAL CAMP
PG Department of Social Work and Sociology organized Mazhavill rural camp from 24.01.2022 to 30.01.2022. All volunteers along with the camp co-ordinations attented the medical camp in association with department of health, Govt of Kerala. Medical camp conducted at Pullukkad colony camp inaugurated by block member. After that the mooppan of Pullukad colony spoke about the history, culture, moral values of their tribe. Later the social work trainees formed four groups and distributed allopathy and homeopathy medicines in every house. Agriculture officer, Mr.Varun handled interactive session about vegetation of Nelliyampathy area. The session was very informative and helpful. A session on the topic “the scope of social work in abroad” was handled by Mr.Sreekanth from Canada. It was an interactive session. He shared many informative messages on the topic. On the morning 10:30 am conducted a session on palliatives by Nenmara palliative society. Through this program Mr.Jyothish babu (health inspector Nelliyampathy) took a class on health and Mrs. Seethalakshmi (palliative nurse, Nenmara) give an awareness about palliative cares and also shared her experience as a palliative nurse .With this session campers get an awareness about palliative and palliative volunteering through this program some food kits distributed to the palliative members. Honorable Remya Haridas and honorable MLA T Sidhique honored the teachers of Polachirakkal higher secondary school for their many years of service. Trekking was also arranged by forest department to ‘Kesavan para’ and ‘Minnampara’. It was a thrilling and very wonderful experience to the social work trainees. Bird watching was done at Poothundi estate and nearby Polachirakkal. It was very helpful to get to know the nature and see the unfamiliar birds.The bird watching program conducted by Mr.Anil. The music therapy was led by Agency supervisor Mr. Ashok. The session was a unforgettable experience for the members. It was a session that went deep into everyone’s mind. Conducted feedback session in which, the students and camp coordinators shared their experiences of the Mazhavillu 2022 camp by the evaluation.
